How to Get a Real Estate License

In order to be licensed as a Real Estate Salesperson by the New Jersey Real Estate Commission, a prospective candidate must (among other requirements):

  • Be over 18 years of age, have the equivalent of a high school education and legally reside in the United States;

  • Pass a state real estate exam required by the Real Estate Commission;

  • Answer a series of prescreening questions intended to satisfy the REC of the candidate’s honesty, trustworthiness and integrity;

  • Submit to a criminal background check and fingerprinting;

  • Gain sponsorship by a New Jersey licensed real estate broker, and

  • Submit an application to the New Jersey Real Estate Commission.

License candidates have one year from the date on their Course Completion Certificate to complete fingerprinting, gain broker sponsorship and submit a license application to the NJ REC. Failure to file an application within one year will require retaking the pre-license course, including the school exam and retaking the state real estate exam.

We strongly suggest that any candidate who has a history of public records (criminal convictions, disorderly person offenses and the like) contact the Real Estate Commission PRIOR TO registering for the Real Estate Salesperson Course to better understand whether they are eligible for licensure.
